👩‍🍳 How to Make Philly Cheesesteak Sandwiches

These step-by-step instructions are accompanied by detailed photos for enhanced clarity and guidance.

Step 1. Cut up the Onion, Red Bell Pepper, and Steak

With a sharp knife, slice, dice, or chop (whatever is your personal preference) one small yellow onion, just enough for 1 cup. Then, slice the red bell pepper. After that, slice the steak into small bite-sized pieces, preferably thin slices or thin strips.

Then, in a large skillet, add 1 tablespoon of olive oil together with the sliced onion and sliced red bell pepper.

Sauté the onions and red bell peppers on medium heat for 5 minutes while stirring occasionally, until the onions and red bell peppers are soft.

Step 2. Add Steak then Brown

Add the sliced steak together with the sautéed onions and sautéed peppers. Cook on medium-high heat and stir while the steak is browning, about 10 to 15 minutes.

Step 3. Drain Liquid then Add Seasoning

When the steak has browned, discard any unwanted liquid (grease) from the frying pan. Then, reduce the heat to medium and add 1 teaspoon of Lawry’s season salt to the steak mixture. Mix thoroughly.

Step 6. Spread Butter on Hoagie Rolls then Bake

This recipe uses four soft hoagie rolls. You can buy any brand of rolls you prefer at your local grocery store.

Spread a nice amount of butter, a half of a tablespoon of butter is good, on the inside of each of the hoagie rolls, then place the rolls uncovered and slightly opened on a pan that will fit into the toaster oven or a sheet pan for a regular oven.

We used the toaster oven and set it at 400 degrees, but if you don’t have a toaster oven, a regular oven set at 400 degrees Fahrenheit will work. Since we used a toaster oven, you need to keep checking on the rolls if you are using a regular oven.

Put the hoagie rolls into the toaster oven, or regular oven, for about 3 minutes or so, or however long to your liking, until the buttered inside the rolls are melted.

Step 7. Spread Philly Cheesesteak Mixture on Hoagie Rolls

Take the soft hoagie rolls out of the oven when the butter is melted, and then divide the Philly cheesesteak mixture equally on each soft hoagie roll. And there you have it, all done and ready to serve. So delicious!! Enjoy!

🌟 Recipe Variations

  • Do you like lots of onions in your sandwich, like I do? If so, then go ahead and use the whole onion instead of the one cup called for in this recipe. Or, you can always freeze the leftover chopped onion. Put them in a freezer bag and then place them in the freezer to use at another time in a different recipe.
  • If you would like caramelized onions in your Philly cheesesteak sandwich, you can go ahead and caramelize the onions first before adding the chopped red peppers.
  • Add any of your favorite seasonings to this already incredible dinner, such as black pepper, garlic powder or salt, cayenne pepper, or red pepper flakes.
  • We use olive oil for this recipe, but if you so happen to not have any in the kitchen, you can substitute canola oil or vegetable oil.
  • You can swap out the steak and make ground beef Philly cheesesteak instead.

You can thank Pat Olivieri and his brother Harry Olivieri (co-creators of the cheesesteak) for making this famous sandwich way back in the year of 1930 in Philadelphia. The choices of cheese they used were American cheese, provolone, and even cheez whiz. Today’s recipes can vary slightly from one recipe to the next, so you can experiment too, and use any of your favorite cheese that sounds good to you. Italian blended cheese is a good example.
