📑 How to Make Chocolate Chip M&M Cookies

These step-by-step instructions are accompanied by detailed photos for enhanced clarity and guidance.

Step 1. Preheat the Oven

Heat your oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit. Take note that not all ovens are the same. With that said, you may have to adjust the cooking time and temperature of your oven if it cooks at a lower or higher heat than ours.

Step 2. Prepare the Dry Ingredients

In a large bowl, stir 4 cups of all purpose flour together with 1 teaspoon of baking powder, 1 teaspoon of baking soda, and 1 teaspoon of salt. Set the flour mixture aside until later.

Step 3. Soften the Butter

Make room temperature butter by taking 2 sticks of cold butter out of the refrigerator and let it sit on the countertop for about 15 minutes, or, you can put the butter in a small bowl that is safe for the microwave, then melt it for 40 seconds until the butter starts to soften.

Step 4. Prepare the Wet Ingredients

In another large bowl, add the melted butter together with 1 cup of granulated sugar, and 1 and 1/2 cups of light brown sugar.

Tip: If you prefer, you can use an electric mixer instead of mixing the cookie dough by hand with a spatula. Start out on low speed and gradually increase to medium-high speed.

Step 12. Place Parchment Paper and Cookie Dough on a Baking Sheet

Line a baking sheet (also known as a cookie sheet) with parchment paper. If you don’t have any parchment paper, spray the baking sheet with non-stick cooking spray. After that is done, scoop out some cookie dough balls one at a time and place them on the prepared baking sheet about 2 inches apart.

If you have a cookie scooper, that works very well to scoop out the cookie dough. Slightly press two or three additional M&M candies on the top of the cookie dough balls after you place them on the cookie sheet and before baking them.

Step 13. Bake the Cookies

Slide the first batch of cookies into the oven and bake at 375 degrees Fahrenheit for 11 minutes, or just until there is a little bit of light golden brown on the cookies. But equally important, do not over bake.

After the bake time is done, remove the cookies from the oven. Leave the baked cookies on the cookie sheet for about 1 to 2 minutes. Cookies still cook for a bit when left on the cookie sheet right out of the oven, hence the “do not over bake” rule. And also, they are softer at this time and can break apart trying to get them off of the cookie sheet. After the cookies cool, they become firmer, and that’s normal.

Step 14. Let the Cookies Cool

Slide a flat spatula under each cookie and transfer them from the cookie sheet over to the cooling rack and let them sit for a couple of minutes until cool. If you take them off of the cooling rack too soon, they may fall apart. Continue to use all the remaining dough for your second and third batches of cookies.

Cookie Tip: Do not place the cookie dough balls for the next batch on the hot (or even warm) cookie sheet. The cookie dough will start to spread before you even put the cookies in the oven to bake. Touch the cookie sheet to make sure it has completely cooled down.

✨ Recipe Variations

  • Change out the color of the M&M candies for any holiday season, such as all green M&M candies for St. Patrick’s Day, or all red for Valentine’s Day, and of course, use red and green M&M candies for Christmas M&M cookies.
  • If you prefer, you can add extra mini chocolate chips on the tops of the cookies before baking.
  • White chocolate chips can be used instead of the chocolate colored chocolate chips.
  • You can make small cookies or large cookies, or even giant M&M cookies.
  • Use mini M&M candies instead of the regular M&M candies.

🙋 FAQs

Can Chocolate Chip M&M Cookies be Stored in the Freezer?

Yes, chocolate chip M&M cookies can be stored in the freezer. When stored properly in a freezer bag or an airtight container, cookies can last about 6 months in the freezer. When you need a cookie or two, take a couple out of the Ziploc bag and put them on the countertop to thaw. They thaw very quickly.

How Long do Chocolate Chip M&M Cookies Last?

Chocolate chip M&M cookies can last about 2 weeks in a container on the cupboard. You can store the cookies in a zip lock bag or a Tupperware container. Put a piece of bread in the container to keep the cookies super soft. Usually the heel works great for this since no one eats it anyway.

Why use Parchment Paper to Bake Cookies?

Parchment paper helps keep the cookies from spreading too thin while baking on the hot cookie sheet in the oven, hence thicker cookies. Cookies won’t stick to parchment paper. And, parchment paper also helps distribute the heat more evenly than without the use of it.

Do you mean two STICKS butter–1 cup? A pound of butter seems… excessive.

Thank you so much for your comment! I actually had to double check how we made this recipe because that does seem like a lot of butter. You are right! It should be 2 sticks of butter (1 cup). We are going to fix it in the recipe. Thanks again!
